My Financial Freedom, Money and Debt Story

I remember the moment when the idea to help others with their finances dawned on me. It wasn’t some grand plan; it simply unfolded naturally. Picture this: I was in late middle school, and one evening, I saw my mom sifting through a stack of bills. The look on her face was a mix of discouragement, stress, and frustration. She was doing her best to pay what she could.

So, I asked her, “Can I help?” She shrugged and said, “Why not?” That moment at the kitchen table with my mom and grandmother marked the beginning of my journey. We opened each bill, organized them into a stack, and, unknowingly, created a spending plan / budget. This simple act allowed us to chart a course on what to pay, when, and in what order. We persisted for a few months, and gradually, things started to change.

Little did I know that these bills were what remained after my mom had to file for bankruptcy. It forced us out of our home, and we moved in with my grandparents while she got back on her feet. I could sense her shame, not wanting us kids to know.

When I moved out on my own, that practice of listing bills, expenses, and income became my trusted tool. It helped me keep track of my financial responsibilities, setting priorities like rent, utilities, and food. But I wasn’t immune to life’s ups and downs. I had to learn the hard way, like saving for unexpected car repairs and tire replacements.

Life took a wonderful turn when I met the love of my life, and we tied the knot. However, like many couples, we had different financial approaches – one a natural saver, the other a natural spender. It was time for us to get on the same page.

Our situation wasn’t dire, but it wasn’t as promising as we envisioned. We owned a house and could buy cars and motorcycles on credit. Still, there was never enough money left after the bills to fulfill our desires and create lasting experiences for our family.

This realization fueled my quest for financial knowledge. I immersed myself in programs, classes, seminars, conversations, and books. About 20 years ago, our diligence paid off when we climbed out of a mountain of debt caused by reckless spending. The feeling was euphoric.

Several years later, the Subprime Mortgage Crisis shook the world. I remember sitting down with our teenage kids, asking about their concerns. It was heartening to know that we had made changes in our financial management that allowed our family to thrive, even during such a challenging time. Our children were worry-free because we had no debt except our home and a year’s worth of expenses saved.

This transformation was swift. In a year, we paid off all our debt, saved a year’s worth of expenses, and I began my college journey. I was determined to avoid debt and paid for college as I went – applying for scholarships, working, and saving. It took seven years, but I earned my Associate’s in Accounting and a Bachelor’s in Business with a focus on Money Matters from Colorado Mountain College.

Despite entering the corporate world, the allure of personal finance never waned. I found my passion in teaching and facilitating classes. Witnessing the transformation in people as they became less stressed about money was incredibly fulfilling. You could see it in the way they carried themselves, spoke, and smiled.

A few years ago, I shared my dream of becoming a financial coach with my husband. He wholeheartedly supported it. So, when I was laid off at the end of 2023, I leaped into this journey full-time.

I’m sharing this story to let you know that change is possible, and your financial dreams are within reach. My path may have been winding, but I’m here to guide you toward your own financial success and the peace of mind you deserve. Let’s start this empowering journey together!
